About Visas
Please decide on a course and stay duration that matches your study goals. The necessary visa and enrollment procedures differ depending on the length of your study.
Student Visa [The YAMASA Institute Accredited Course (Planned)]
If you wish to study for 6 months or more and cannot stay in Japan on a Short-Term Stay Visa (or other visas), you must apply for a Student Visa.
From October 2026, the only course at The YAMASA Institute eligible for a Student Visa application will be the “Language and Culture Research 2-Year Course”. If you wish to obtain a Student Visa for other durations, please contact us. We will use your feedback for future course planning.
Enrollment takes place 4 times a year: April, July, October, and January.
The application period starts approximately 8 months prior to enrollment. Deadlines vary depending on the enrollment intake.
Please review the “YAMASA Student Visa Explanation and Application” section below before proceeding to the application. After applying and completing procedures at YAMASA, YAMASA will apply for the visa on your behalf.

Short-Term Stay Visa
Students taking short-term courses can enter Japan on a Short-Term Stay Visa (Tourist Visa).
The duration of a Short-Term Stay Visa depends on your nationality but is typically 3 months or 90 days.
Most nationalities do not need to apply for a Short-Term Stay Visa before coming to Japan (Visa Waiver). However, depending on your nationality, you may need to apply beforehand. Please contact your nearest Japanese Embassy to confirm the requirements for your nationality.
This will allow you to match the necessary conditions for your planned study abroad.

Working Holiday Visa
If your country has a Working Holiday agreement with the Japanese government, you can obtain a Working Holiday Visa.
Countries with Working Holiday Agreements
For details, please contact your nearest Japanese Embassy or Consulate.
Applications are only accepted at Japanese Embassies or Consulates in countries with a Working Holiday agreement.
For applicants from Taiwan, please contact the Interchange Association, Japan (IAJ).
You do not need documents from YAMASA when applying for this visa.
Working Holiday Visa holders can take any course and study while working.
*However, enrollment in the “Language and Culture Research 2-Year Course” is limited to those who have a 2-year period of stay.

We also offer online courses that allow you to take lessons anytime, anywhere, regardless of time or location. The YAMASA Institute has produced over 8,000 graduates, including international students, travelers, corporate clients, and residents. In response to feedback such as “I want to take YAMASA lessons even after graduation” or “I heard about YAMASA’s reputation from a friend and want to study there,” we started the specialized online program “YAMASA Online”.

There are several ways to pay fees. Receipts are issued for all payments (in Japanese). If you need a receipt in English or another language for tax or scholarship purposes, please contact us.

Credit Card
At YAMASA, you can pay fees using VISA and MasterCard. While VISA is the most widely accepted card in Japan, not all VISA cards issued overseas can be used at ATMs. Cards are also accepted at the Okazaki Shinkin Bank branch (about 200 meters from YAMASA), Post Offices, and 7-Eleven stores.
Cash (Domestic)
Japan is a cash-based society. However, please do not send cash via mail or courier. This method is only used when paying in person at the school.
Japan Post Bank (Domestic)
If you reside in Japan, you can pay the entrance fee using the Post Office transfer system “Payment Slip (Genkin Kakitome/Pay-easy).” The transfer limit is usually 500,000 JPY.
