Overview

Overview: Student Village was custom-designed by YAMASA for international students and was completed in two phases in 1999 and 2000. It was designed with particular attention to the needs of short-term students (three months or less). Students who stay for only one or two months often incur additional costs when living in a studio apartment, such as purchasing cooking utensils or mobile phones. However, at Student Village this issue is addressed by providing excellent shared facilities. Students cooperate to keep the shared areas clean, and a full-time resident manager is available to respond to emergencies and supervise the order and cleanliness of the residence. Although Student Village was designed mainly for short-term students, any student may stay here. Please also note that Student Village can easily be included as an accommodation option between a homestay and other housing options.

Location: The distance from Student Village to the campus is about a 12-minute walk, or only 6 minutes by bicycle. In addition to being close to the campus, the residence is also conveniently located near shops, restaurants, and supermarkets. A 24-hour convenience store is located next door, and the nearest bus stop is only 80 meters away. Bicycle parking is available outside the main entrance.

Rooms: The study/bedrooms are located on the second and third floors. All rooms are Western-style rather than tatami-style, with polished wooden floors. All doors have individual locks. Each room has windows for natural light, air conditioning/heating, and a large closet. The ceilings and doorways are unusually high, and Student Village is one of the few residential buildings in Japan where tall people do not need to worry about bending down when entering a room. Each student is provided with a large closet, a bookshelf, a lockable desk with a gas-lift chair, a reading lamp, and a wireless router with a LAN socket for internet access. The electrical supply is 100 volts AC. Beds are provided, but mattresses or futons are not included (see below).

Toilets/Bathrooms: At the end of each hallway there are washrooms and shower rooms. The facilities are separated by gender, with women using the facilities on the third floor and men using those on the second floor. Each floor has five Western-style toilets and washbasins. The first floor has an additional five toilets and two bathrooms. All doors are solid wood and extend from the top of the door frame to the floor, providing additional privacy.

Shower Rooms: Each floor has six shower rooms. Each shower room is private; there are no shared showers. Each shower room has its own changing room with a solid wooden door that extends from the top of the door frame to the floor, providing greater privacy. The outer door has a secure lock (which can only be opened from inside the shower room), allowing valuables to be protected. There is also an additional door (not a curtain) separating the shower room and the changing room, helping keep clothes, towels, and other personal items clean and dry. The showers are not coin-operated. There are no time limits or restrictions on when the showers may be used.

Kitchen and Lounge Areas: On the first floor there are two spacious, fully equipped kitchens. Everything necessary is provided by YAMASA, including gas ranges, stoves, ovens, microwave ovens, rice cookers, and toasters. The two adjacent lounges provide plenty of dining space and are equipped with cable television. Outside the lounges there is a large covered terrace. The terrace is sheltered and is often used by students to relax or enjoy drinks.

Coin Laundry: A coin laundry facility is located next to Student Village.

Internet: Each room is equipped with one wireless router and four 1 Gbps LAN sockets for unlimited free internet access. The two basement lounges are also covered by the wireless network.

Futons: Futons are not provided, but they can be rented or purchased through YAMASA.

Security: The Village is located in a safe area and the grounds are well lit. A resident manager is available to respond to emergencies. There is no curfew. All students have a key for the electronic lock at the main entrance. All internal doors can be locked. All student desks can also be locked. The toilet doors and the doors to each shower room’s private changing area can also be locked to ensure additional privacy.
