Completed in 2005, YAMASA’s fully furnished Residence Hane apartments were designed based on feedback from our students about what an ideal apartment for international residents in Japan should be like. As a result, Residence Hane includes many features that are especially suitable for people who are 175 cm (5 ft 7 in) or taller, as well as for students from Europe, North America, and Oceania. These features include:
- Shower head adjustable up to 210 cm (6 ft 11 in)
- Western-style toilet
- High ceilings and door frames
- Higher benches and countertops
- Spacious kitchen area
Overview
Concept: These apartments feature spacious food preparation areas, high ceilings and door frames, improved energy efficiency, and better privacy and security. The rooms were intentionally designed to provide a more comfortable living experience in Japan for students who are 175 cm (5 ft 7 in) or taller. The height of the desk, sink, food preparation areas, and shower head has been increased to reduce back pain and discomfort. There are 10 Type A apartments and 2 Type B apartments, and all include covered balconies where residents can relax outdoors. Four of these balconies are large enough for up to four people to enjoy outdoor dining. All apartments are furnished, bright, and designed for comfortable single occupancy. Double-glazed windows and extensive soundproofing help reduce the impact of outside noise on living and study environments. The apartments are Western-style with polished wooden floors. The interior space of a Type A apartment is 21.7 square meters (about 235 square feet), while Type B apartments are 25.2 square meters (about 270 square feet).
Location: Residence Hane is located next to Student Village and is about a 12-minute walk from campus (6 minutes by bicycle). It is also close to shops, restaurants, supermarkets, and a bus stop. A 24-hour convenience store and a coin laundry that operates until late at night are both within a one-minute walk.
Shower/Bathroom: The shower/bathroom is designed with taller residents in mind, allowing the shower head to be adjusted in height. As a result, even students who are over 210 cm (about 6 ft 11 in) tall can shower comfortably while standing upright. The shower/bathroom has a small window to allow fresh air in during the day and a ventilation fan to remove steam. Even when the window is open, full privacy is maintained. There is also a deep bathtub and a mirror. The floor is lowered, and a lip at the bottom of the door prevents water from leaking out of the shower room, ensuring that the dressing area remains dry. This is a convenient advantage compared with other YAMASA apartments such as Residence U or Villa, especially when guests are visiting.
Toilet: The toilet is Western-style and has two toilet paper holders with a small shelf above them. There is also an additional shelf above the toilet (deeper and spanning the width of the room) that can be used for storing toilet paper and other items.
Washbasin / Mirror: The washbasin is height-adjusted so that taller students can use it comfortably. A separate mirror is provided so that students do not need to enter the shower room to use it. There is also plenty of storage space, including cabinets and shelves. Additional features include a toothbrush holder, very bright lighting, and power outlets (100V) for appliances such as hair dryers or electric razors.
Kitchen: The kitchen in Type A apartments is smaller than in Type B due to space limitations, but it is still superior to those in other YAMASA apartments. All work surfaces are height-adjusted and include excellent lighting and a ventilation fan. Storage space is also greater than in other apartments. The kitchen provides ample space for food preparation. YAMASA provides a refrigerator, electric hot plate, and electric rice cooker. The following equipment is included:
~ Dual convection / microwave oven (can be used as either a microwave or an oven)
~ 137-liter refrigerator (with freezer)
~ Toaster oven
~ Gas stove (two burners with grill)
~ Saucepan, frying pan, kettle
Please note that cooking utensils are not provided, but they can be purchased inexpensively at nearby stores (such as “100-yen shops”).
Living Area: The curtains include sheer panels that allow light in while maintaining privacy. The ceilings are high. Each apartment includes air conditioning/heating, adjustable ventilation outlets, a wardrobe with hanging rails, a higher desk, a gas-lift chair, an internal telephone, a bed, a study lamp, and a bookshelf. All apartments also have a pole for drying laundry.
Internet: Each apartment is equipped with one wireless router and four 1 Gbps LAN sockets for unlimited free internet access.
