Learn Japanese Online

The OCJS is the only online JSL (Japanese as a Second Language) program offered by an accredited, non-profit Japanese language Institute in Japan. Experience genuine self-paced learning that is available entirely on-demand, fully customizable and accessible from around the world. We have a curriculum that is fully integrated with the intensive residential programs offered by The Yamasa Institute.

Under continuous full-time development since 1998 with the support of the Hattori Foundation (Est 1919), the OCJS has several distinctive features, including the extensive OCJS Audio library that currently comprises over 40,000 Sound Files recorded by our native Japanese faculty members. The Kanji Dictionary includes stroke-order animations of ALL of the Kanji in current usage and in the specifications for the Japanese Language Proficiency Test.

To get the most out of the OCJS, you will require a Standard Level (Level 3) password or above. At this level, you can have access to all 50 lessons of the Beginner Level Curriculum, full access to the Bulletin Board, as well as unrestricted access to the entire Kanji Dictionary. Please click here for details on how to access the OCJS.

(Please note that if you have studied (or are currently studying) at Yamasa since April 1st 2002, then you already have Standard Level (Level 3) access the Beginner Curriculum lessons and the Kanji Dictionary. If you are or were a Yamasa student, please click here for more details)
