Wally's Yamasa Journal

2004 Feb 2 (Monday) to Feb 5 (Thursday) - Do I feel lucky?

I sometimes rely on luck more than I should which is not good because it has its ways of coming up with some nasty surprises. Getting "Panku'ed" (a flat tire) on the way home Sunday night wasn't fun as it was. I was disappointed a bit that I didn't see any of the Super Bowl on Monday (I did actually wait until Tuesday to find out what happened), and someone managed to pull out an ace-high full house to my queen-high full house in a poker game that night in the pub. That cost me a few hundred yen.

Being without the bike for the week did slow me down. I didn't have any tools to fix it on my own and the nearby bike store was unexpectedly closed on Tuesday and Wednesday (for a mainstream looking place, it sometimes picks odd days to be closed). I stopped by the Furo Bar Monday night because perhaps the Super Bowl would be on and it would have been fun to watch it from Japan (it was not) but I ended up with the aforementioned poker game instead. It was a pretty happy crowd in there anyways, though. The bar's not usually open on Mondays so this was a treat for the drinkers.

Shodou continued this week as well. Inagaki Sensei told me that I understand the stroke order all right but I need to take it slowly and use more of the brush. I also picked up another DVD, a movie called "Out" which I found on a Japanese movie top 10 list for 2002. It was called a black comedy but it was more a drama to me. If there were jokes, I didn't understand them anyways and on the most part, it still was pretty serious, I thought. It was a good movie, some on the internet calling it a Japanese "Thelma and Louise" thought I didn't quite see it that way. Coincidentally, the book it was based on was announced this week as a nominee for an Edgar Allen Poe suspense writing award. I may have to check it out, since I found out that the book has been translated into English.

I also tried an anime called "The Beautiful World", an interesting-looking series that seems to take place in a world that mixes the past and future. The series follows a boy on his motorcycle as he travels to towns and villages and the stories that develop in a world where people seem to be losing their ability to relate to each other. I may want to follow up on it when I get back home. There, the DVD may at least have sub-titles.

Beyond all this, there was the Snow Festival trip to get ready for. Been looking forward to it for awhile. Despite the start of the week, I know I've been lucky already to be able to do as much as I've done with this time here already. That ace-high full house does bug me a little though.
