(2) Bulletin Boards

Some questions don't need to be answered by me or the staff. For example you may have a question best answered by a Japanese language teacher (for example about grammar, proofreading a letter you have written in Japanese etc), or is best answered by another student (for example if you are looking for travel partner or are a new student wanting to buy a bike or a VCR from someone completing their program etc). For questions such as these you may find that the
Online Forums & Bulletin Boards give you a faster and more useful reply.

(3) Email

I get a lot of email, couple of hundred a day is usual. In most cases, the information that people are asking for is already on one of the homepages, but is either hard to find or hasn't been looked for etc. In some cases people are sending their questions to the wrong email address. As you can imagine, replying to everyone can take a lot of time, and sometimes isn't immediately possible. I aim for a reply within 24 hours, but it can take up to a week sometimes, especially if I'm away from the office on a road trip. If you need the information fast (as in right now) - you need to help me help you. Here's a few hints...

  • Before you write to me, check the website *thoroughly* first.
  • If you can't find it through the navigation icons, use search (and use the search tips).
  • If you still can't find it, read through the "frequently asked questions" directory, the student manual/catalogs, and if you are really desperate, the "Things I'm not very helpful with" and "Things I'm helpful with" files.
  • If you still can't find it, or have detailed questions, its time to write.

    A few important things....

    a) First up, choose a name for your email. Write some detail in the subject line of your email so that I know what it might be about. Do not leave the subject line blank, or write "Hi!", as my filters will automatically junk your message. Something short and succinct to catch my eye is best.

    b) Make sure you put your own name on the email. I do not answer anonymous mails. If you are not prepared to identify yourself, what is the point in writing to me in the first place?

    c) Next step is to choose the right email address. Most of my email (including so called "personal" mails) will be answered by my staff & assistants. If you send your question to the wrong person, it won't be lost, but it will take a little longer to get a reply to you. The full list of email addresses can be found here.

My "personal" email addresses at work (please do not write to these addresses unless I know you well, or you are replying to an email originating from either of those two addresses) are declan AT yamasa DOT org and declan AT frontia DOT co DOT jp

DO NOT CALL MY CELLPHONE except in the case of emergencies. It is not to be used for general inquiries or for when the numbers above are busy. "Emergencies" means medical & safety issues - it does not include course inquiries, or asking me how to order a pizza in Japanese because you are hungry!

If you have an urgent need to reach me, e.g., if you are a customer experiencing an urgent problem and my staff are unavailable at the usual contact numbers then please call my cell phone: 090-8868-8210. When calling, please start by telling me your name first.

(A special note for Europeans and North Americans "JAPAN = GMT+8" means that I'd really appreciate it if you didn't call in the middle of the night. I work insane hours at times - and yes even a cyborg needs his sleep).
