The Yunomine onsen is made up of several pools, the most famous of which is "Tsubo-no-yu". This pool changes color seven times a day. There are many stories about the healing powers of the waters here. One of the most famous stories claims that an ancient Japanese officer, Oguri Hangan, was cured of a serious illness after bathing here with his wife the Princess Terute.
How to Get There
The JR Kisei line from either Nagoya or Osaka will take you to the Kii peninsula and the Kumano Sanzan area. Take the train to Shingu station. From here you can get the bus to Yunomine in the Town of Hongu. The bus journey takes about 70 minutes. If you are coming from Kyoto, you can also take the train to Tanabe (2hrs) and from there go by bus over the mountains to Hongu (3 hrs.).Tours - The Japan Discovery Tours visits Wakayama Prefecture
