The Karamon, or "Chinese gabled gate". This view is from the Haiden, ie - from the rear of the gate. Karamon gates are common in most Tokugawa era buildings, a legacy of the extensive trade and contact that influenced Japan during the 16th century. Click here or on photo to return to previous page.
