Kyuu Kaichi school was opened in 1873. The school building is one of the oldest elementary school buildings in Japan and had been used for 90 years. The existing building was restored as close as possible to the original structure. Kaichi means to develop intellect, and this school was named after a passage of "The introduction of the Education system" in that day. Kaichi school was planned by then governor Moriteru Nagayama, who positioned learning at the center of administration and strongly enhanced civilization policy. The building was designed by a local master carpenter Seiju Tateishi. 70% of its construction cost was funded by the donation from the people of Matsumoto.
The cradle of modern education. School system was promulgated in 1872 and modern education of Japan started. Kaichi School served as the base of modern education not only in Matsumoto but also in Shinshu district as a whole. Some 90,000 educational materials from the late Edo period to present day are stored, and some of them are on exhibit.
Designation as an important cultural property. Kaichi school is a representative quasi-western style building which symbolizes civilization and enlightenment movement in the beginning of the meiji era. This building was designated as an imperial cultural property in 1961, the forst ICP of school buildings in Japan. Transfer and repair in the showa era. Former Kaichi school used to stand on the banks of the Metoba river for 90 years. When the river improvement work was planned, the building was transferred to the present site, and was opened to the public as an education museum in 1965.
Exhibits. The materials stored and exhibited in the former Kaichi schol are roughly divided into two groups, namely, educational materials and architectural materials. Educational materials... textbooks for private elementary schools in the Edo period, materials on the days of establishment of schools in the early meiji era, and so on. Architectural materials... materials related to construction of kaichi school and the master carpenter Seiju Tateishi, and so on. A 4th generation state-compiled schoolbook. This book was used from 1933 to 1940. Folklore cards made by school teachers of kaichi school as supplementary teaching materials.
About 10 minutes walk north of the castle is this charming old school building, a symbol of Matsumoto's tradition of scholarship. Built in 1876 by a Matsumoto master carpenter/architext (which?) it originally stood elsewhere in the town. Threatened by redevelopment plans, the school was reconstructed on its present site in 1964. The building was famous nationwide in the late 19th century, when it was known as the blue and white school. Today it stands in its original bright colors and with all the architectural trimmings that made it a model for other schools of the age. Part-japanese and part western it is a very interesting building with many playful touches inside and out. Meiji-mura link?
