Toba City

This is a small coastal city that most tourist guides advise you to miss. It has become something of a tourist circus, and if you haven't learnt any Japanese or history then it is difficult to understand the attraction of Toba to Japanese. It is a maritime port - Toba was the last place of refuge from storms for junks or boats sailing to Edo ( Tokyo) from Mikawa (Okazaki) or Ise Bay (Nagoya). Sake from places like Kunizakari, and pottery from Tokoname, were transhippped via Toba. Old merchant's houses and the graves of seamen are common. The 20th century brought progress in ship technology - so Toba gradually became less and less important.

These days Toba is best known as the home of Mikimoto and the cultured pearls, and as the gateway to the Ise Grand Shrines and the vast Ise-shima National Park. There are car ferries from Cape Irago on the Atsumi Peninsula in Aichi Prefecture, and JR and Kintetsu railroads run services to Toba.

  • Ise Grand Shrines

    How to get there:

From Tokyo: you can get to Toba by train via Nagoya.
From Okazaki: Take a train to Nagoya on the JR line (600 yen, about 30 minutes), then switch to the Kintetsu line and take a train to Toba (1670 yen, about an hour and a half).

Tours - Japan Discovery visits Toba.
