Paul's Cafe     Sapporo City Guide

Paul's Cafe
Paul's Cafe
Paul's Cafe is a piece of heaven in Sapporo. So good that it took a number of very enjoyable visits to "get the review right". A Belgian style cafe owned and managed by Paul De Koninck from Antwerp, his food is fantastic, the roasted chicken almost a gift from the gods, and worth the visit for that alone. It is located underneath the Century Royal Hotel near Sapporo Station (in the building next to the Kiinokuniya Bookstore). If the weather is bad, or just Sapporo style cold, you can also get to Paul's Cafe from the station via the underground APIA mall.

The beer selection is wonderful, and arguably better than anything available in Tokyo or Aichi. There is always a surprise waiting at the beer taps. My last visit started with a Poperings Hommel and De Koninck (both on tap - I skipped the Hoegaarden White & the ubiquitous Stella Artois), as well as an extensive range of bottled Belgian beers (all served correctly and in the proper glasses). Apart from the usual bottled suspects of Chimay, Leffe, Hoegaarden & wide range of fruit flavored brews, there are a few beers almost unobtainable in Japan including Het Kapittel Watou Prior (980 yen). Paul's Cafe even has an extensive range of Magnum size bottles. Beer prices range from 680 yen for the on tap brews, to 8500 yen for a bottle of Malheur Brut Reserve - which I unfortunately had no alternative but to decline.

The food is wonderful. Apart from the aforementioned roast chicken, you have everything from juicy handmade meatballs to beef stewed in Leffe, to salted mackerel marinated with beer, to pasta and a range of salads. If you visit primarily to drink, there is a fantastic snack menu including Belgian dry ham, frites, dark breads, sausages and cheeses.

Paul's cafe is very clean, the service is professional, informed, courteous and unintrusive, and the coffees amongst the best I've tasted outside Europe - end of story, end of review.

Location: Sapporo City, Chuo-ku Kita 5, Nishi 5, Sumitomo Seimei Building B1F
Hours: Open from 11:30-23:00 daily with no fixed weekly holiday (Closes early on Sundays at 9pm). Paul's Cafe is closed during Golden Week, Obon, and New Year
