Campus Location

The Sapporo campus is located in a quiet residential area of Sapporo to the south west of the city center. Maruyama Koen (a large city park) is nearby, with its extensive forests, nature trails, recreational and sporting facilities and the Hokkaido Shrine. There are shops, cafes and restaurants located nearby, especially in the area around the subway station and the major road about 5 minutes walk to the south. The US Consulate is about half a mile from the school.

The closest subway station is Maruyama Koen on the Tozai (East-West) line. To get from the station to the school walk due south (click here for map). Your accommodation and the city center including the Susukino and Odori Park areas are within easy distance (15 minutes) by bicycle. Sapporo's terrain is largely flat, and the street system is laid out in a grid (unusual for Japan), making it very easier for navigation and cycling.

Compared to Okazaki, the Sapporo campus is very small with only the one building, though there are plans to redevelop to facilitate more course offerings and options. The Hokkaido Center is a 4 storey high building, with the Student Services and Teachers Office on the ground floor. There are vending machines, printing and photocopying services available. Assistance in English is available if required.

All of the classrooms have heating & air-conditioning as well as windows providing good natural light. Sapporo's winters are very cold, but all windows are double pane for insulation and the building is dry and comfortably heated during the winter months. Summer in Sapporo is not as humid as in Okazaki and other cities to the south, but recent summers have been unusually warm. Most apartments in Sapporo do not have air-conditioning, but to make the study environment in the classrooms more comfortable airconditioning has been installed. It is usually only used from late July to late August.

At this stage there is on-campus internet access is limited. PC's are provided for those who do not have their own laptops. We are planning to install a full wireless LAN so that access extends to all classrooms.
