Sapporo is the largest city in Hokkaido and the 5th largest metropolitan area in Japan. The Hokkaido Center enables you to study Japanese in Sapporo either as a short course (summer, winter) or as part of a rewarding Academic Year in Japan. The programs are taught by teaching teams using the direct method. All instructors are qualified teachers, experienced, and native speakers of the Japanese language. Each of the programs are highly suitable for beginner through to intermediate level students. At this stage upper intermediate and advanced students are advised to study at the larger scale Aichi center in Okazaki.

Summers in Sapporo are mild compared to the cities to the south and are much less humid than those in Aichi. Winters are cold. The city hosts the famous annual "Sapporo Snow Festival" each February - an event held since 1950. With excellent ski fields such as Sapporo Teine, and Sapporo Kokusai closeby, Sapporo also offers excellent skiing, snowboarding & other winter sports, and was the host of the 1972 Winter Olympics, Asian Winter Games and Winter Universiade. Improving transportation infrastructure in Hokkaido is making it easier to reach the powder bowls of Niseko and pristine conditions of Niseko - and Sapporo city is central to both.

As with the ACJS, the HCJS campus is located in a fairly quiet, predominantly residential area, but is still fairly close to the city center - about 20 minutes by bicycle - and very convenient for public transport (subway, streetcars & bus network). The modern, comfortable accommodations are also located fairly closeby, as are a wide variety of shops and restaurants. The overall cost of living is relatively cheaper than the national average and part-time employment opportunities are available for student visa holders.

Studying in Japan is one of the cheapest ways to travel and experience Japan, and Sapporo City is one of the easiest cities in Japan to live in. Studying in Sapporo provides you with excellent opportunities to explore Hokkaido with its many interesting national parks and outdoor activities, as well historic towns such as Hakodate, Matsumae & Otaru. By linking the programs of the Aichi Center with the Hokkaido Center, Yamasa is now able to provide students with the first opportunity in Japan to undertake studies in accredited programs in different locations.
