Eligibility and Basic Requirements

Enrollment status:

At the time of the closing of applications, the applicant must be either:

1) a student currently enrolled in an academic program at the Yamasa Institute.
2) a student currently enrolled in an extension program at the Yamasa Institute.
3) a student currently enrolled at a partner university of the Yamasa Institute.
4) a student who has applied for and been accepted into a Yamasa Program academic program, and who has completed the application procedures.

If the applicant is a student currently enrolled in a partner university of the Yamasa Institute then they need to have completed at least 2 semesters of studies prior to application.

Japanese language level:

All financial aid program applicants must be able to prove that they have studied Japanese and can demonstrate a proficiency level equivalent to the Japanese Language Proficiency Test Level 4 or higher.

The applicant must be able to submit:

(a) An academic transcript from the Yamasa Institute OR
(b) A transcript showing the results of either level 1, level 2 or level 3 of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (whether pass or fail) during the 24 months prior to applying for the financial aid. OR
(c) A transcript showing a pass result in level 4 of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test during the 24 months prior to applying for the Scholarship. OR
(d) An original academic transcript or a certified copy of an academic transcript issued by a partner university of the Yamasa Institute. The transcript should clearly indicate the duration of Japanese studies and be accompanied with a letter in Japanese from the faculty of the partner university.OR
(e) An original academic transcript or a certified copy of an academic transcript issued by a university recognized by the Yamasa Institute as providing a high quality level of education. The transcript should clearly indicate the duration of Japanese studies and be accompanied with a letter in Japanese from the faculty of the university, a copy of the curriculum of the most recent program completed and a sample of the examination materials used.

Academic Record:

The applicant will have needed to sustain an overall GPA of 2.75 or equivalent. If the applicant is completing a major or minor in Japanese then a GPA of at least 3.0 in the Japanese language component is required.

2 Letters of recommendation from current or former faculty/academic supervisors are required. At least 1 of these letters should be written in Japanese.
