Japan Discovery Programs (Study Tours)

INTRODUCTION

Travelling to Japan for the first time? Try a study tour combining intensive classes in Yamasa's SILAC program and an adventure tour discovering what Japan is REALLY like. You can combine your studies of Japanese and the Japanese language with hiking or skiing in the Southern Alps, mountain biking through peaceful forests, visiting Tokyo Disneyland, trips to nearby cities such as Nara and Kyoto. Dance late into the night enjoying the nightlife in Nagoya, mix an appreciation for avant garde culture and peaceful buddhist temples (which are often side-by-side, after all this is Japan).

There are six key reasons to do your discovery tour with Yamasa.

1. High Quality Teaching Component: Most 'study tours' only offer elementary classes with casual teachers. Only Yamasa's Discovery program combines intensive language learning with a professional faculty and a minimum of 7 proficiency levels.
2. Flexibility: There are start dates ALL YEAR and the program length can be varied. You can study for 2, 4, 6, 8 or 10 weeks in combination with

  • a 12, 10, 7, 4 or 2 day tour prior to your studies,
  • a 12 day tour during a break in your studies,
  • or a 3, 5, 8, 10 or 12 day tour after your studies are completed.

    3. Small groups: The absolute maximum group size is 18, and it will usually be a lot less. This is the one program in Japan where you will NEVER find yourself following a guide with a little yellow flag or a large group of people whose names you can't remember.
    4. Accommodation: Travel light - you will be able to leave heavy items back in your room in Okazaki. By avoiding expensive hotel stays and exhausting accommodation "hops" - you can enjoy your travels more and save a lot of money.
    5. Real: As a quality education provider - our tours are different to most. With Yamasa you will be using your Japanese, meeting Japanese people, travelling and eating in the same places as ordinary Japanese people. If you want to see THE REAL Japan - it's time to join a Yamasa program.
    6. Lower expenses: Our program fee includes tuition, textbooks, tours (including all entry fees and insurance). The airport transfer is free. The most commonly preferred accommodation is the Yamasa Student Village which has single or shared accommodation available. In the case of "shared by 2" accommodation (twin room), the average nightly stay is less than half the cost of a youth hostel - but with Yamasa's modern facilities including 24 hours free internet access, cable TV etc.

Participants have the opportunity to experience Japan's traditional past as well as its modern hi-tech present. During your vacation you can experience a quick improvement in your Japanese proficiency. No previous study of Japanese is required for participation, and classes are provided up to intermediate levels. The classes concentrate on spoken Japanese, listening and communication. Yamasa's faculty members work as a team to provide considerable variety, although one faculty member will be designated as your academic advisor. All students have the opportunity to use Japanese language software and send/receive email in Japanese. On campus Internet access is free and unlimited.

    PROGRAM OUTLINE

The Discovery programs consist of 2 stages - intensive language acquisition and travel.

    a) Intensive Language Acquisition: Participants will study Japanese for 2, 4, 6 , 8 or 10 weeks in Yamasa's SILAC program.
    b) Travel component: The tour in relatively small groups (maximum size is 18, average is about 8). Tour length can be varied: a 12, 10, 7, 4 or 2 day tour prior to your studies, a 12 day tour during a break in your studies, or a 3, 5, 8, 10 or 12 day tour after your studies are completed.

    PROGRAM SCHEDULE

Each study option is designed so that it can be completed using a tourist visa - this provides more flexibility for a wider range of short term students.

The teaching program has 23 classes per week. The maximum class size is 15 students (5 less than the APJLE regulations require). There are 5 classes per day from Monday to Thursdays 9:00am to 2:30pm. This format is used for all of the beginner level classes (Textbooks - Minna no Nihongo I and II). All classes are 50 minutes long.
