AIJP Spring Quarter Video Class

During the Spring Quarter, one of the elective courses available as part of the AIJP and AJSP was an introductory course in video production. The course was only for 2 hours per week and covered basic skills, but it was designed to give the students the chance to shoot and then edit the video files in a Japanese language environment.

The footage was shot with a SONY digital video camera and editing was then completed using Japanese software. The hardware was a G4 with Mac OS 9 (in Japanese) using iMovie editing software (also in Japanese). Instruction was provided by Ms Mieko Hori of the International Office.

The video files have been edited to suit the internet - a sound card and media player are required for viewing.

As you can see from the 3 tables - we have made 9 versions of each video. These include versions to cover... Real Player, Quicktime (for Mac users), and Windows Media. We have also made 3 sizes to cover different connection speeds - 28K for low speed/telephone users, 56K for ISDN users and a heavier but better image quality LAN version for viewers with LAN, cable or other broadband connections.

It is of course possible to view the LAN version even if you have a phone line - although you will probably experience a lot of buffering. Similarly a viewer with an ISDN or cable connection can of course view the 28K version, but it will appear small (and the picture quality is less), although all other factors (net congestion etc) being equal the buffering will be minimal or none.
