| Okazaki Mikoshi Festival - August 4th 2000 |
The mikoshi (portable festival shrine) is carried through the streets of the Kosei-cho area of Okazaki on the second night of the 3 day summer festival. Okazaki's summer festival is held one week before the Obon festival. The first night consists of the Bon dancing, the second night is the Mikoshi, and the final night (always the first Saturday in August) is the famos Okazaki fireworks.
The year 2000 mikoshi festival was held on August 4th. The shrines were traditionally carried while praying for a rich harvest, protection at home and a prosperous business. The performance also carries a meaning of purification. These days though, it mostly just for fun.
