"Fake Maiko"

The "maiko/ geisha" you might see in Kyoto these days aren't always the real thing. Years of training are involved and numbers are few. In recent years a number of photography shops and other entrepreneurs in Kyoto have found a niche market that lets ordinary tourists (mostly young Japanese women) be a "maiko for a day". There are usually two prices - 1 for a studio shot, and a more expensive price if the "maiko" wants to go out into the street in costume. The "fake maiko" or "1-day maiko" can usually be spotted near Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka (close to Kiyomizudera in Kyoto). If you want to catch a brief glimpse of a real maiko or geisha, try Gion or Pontocho. Both areas are covered in Yamasa's Japan Discovery study tours.
