STUDENT INTERVIEW: Lin Jun Chi Allan (Taiwan, SILAC)

Euan: You just arrived - yesterday, wasn't it?
Allan: Yes, yesterday.

Euan: So is this the first time you've been to Japan?
Allan: No, the third. My father has an import/export company, so I've been to Osaka and some other places a few times..

Euan: And your Japanese is really good - where did you study before?
Allan: In Taiwan at the YMCA for one and a half years - and I came to Yamasa in January last year for one month.

Euan: Really? I don't remember you from then...
Allan: And I don't remember you at all either.

Euan: Hmm. I guess lots of people come and go on the short term programs... But you're also fluent in English - where did you study that?
Allan: In San Francisco for a couple of months but also in Taiwan.

Euan: Why are you studying those languages?
Allan: My father said that I have to learn English and Japanese. So I'm learning English and Japanese! I plan to enter his company later, so I have to learn them first.

Euan: What does the company export?
Allan: They import metal from Japan and China and export it to the USA and Europe.

Euan: So what are you studying at University? Something connected with that?
Allan: I'm in the fourth year. I study Public Relations.

Sleeping in the middle of the party

Euan: And you'll use that when you start work?
Allan: No, completely unrelated to what I'll be doing I think.

Euan: Useful. What will you do after graduation? Start work immediately?
Allan: No, I have to do my military service. That'll be at least a year and a half.

Euan: Can't you get a student visa somewhere and avoid it if you wanted?
Allan: No, you still have to do it when you get back. No escape.
