The distinctive roof top sculpture above the Azumabashi Hall owned by the Asahi Brewing Company. The building itself is interesting and impressive, it was designed by Phillippe Starck and constructed in the late 1980s. The sculpture is supposed to represent either a flame, the froth being blown off the top of a glass of "Asahi Super Dry", the company's leading beer brand, or the shining work ethic of the employees - it depends on who you ask. In Tokyo it is usually referred to as the "O Gon No Unko", the golden turd. The building immediately to the left is supposed to resemble a glass of beer, with the beer and foam represented in glass. This photo was taken from the water bus linking the Hamarikyuu Garden with Asakusa via Hinode Pier (720 yen). Click here or on photo to return to previous page (requires javascript enabled). |
