The footbridge leading to Takeshima in Mikawa Bay at Gamagori. Takeshima is a small island that is listed as a national treasure, because of its history and the diversity of flora. Although extremely small (the circumference is about 600 meters), the island has 238 species of plants, almost all of which are natives. In the middle of the island there is a small temple dedicated to Benten-sama. It has long been part of the local legend that couples should not visit the temple together, as the jealousy aroused in the goddess will destroy the relationship. It takes about 30-45 minutes to walk the island. You have good views of the sea, and during the summer the bridge provides a fantastic vantage point for enjoying the Gamagori fireworks. If the waters in the harbor are fairly still, you get brilliantly colored reflections. Click here or on photo to return to previous page (requires javascript enabled). |
