Being a pallid Englishman, sunburn from last week's rafting in Gifu means I seem to bear an uncomfortable resemblance to a boiled lobster at the moment. I have been avoiding fish restaurants just to be on the safe side.

Obon is now over, so everyone is back at work and Japan functions again. This also marks the turning point in the weather: from now on it slowly cools down. September to November is the best time to visit Japan along with spring in March to June, as the weather is cool and nature is at it's best. Lots of red-leaf (kouyou) viewing and, of course, it's just another good excuse for sitting outside and drinking sake.

This week's features: an interview with Yoko Hikosaka who has all your money if you've ever studied here; white-water rafting in Gifu Prefecture; and booms in Japan. Almost serious and seriously edited.

1. COURSE INFORMATION

New SILAC dates are now online: see the SILAC file in the Program Catalog for details. Courses from March through to May booking now.

NEW HOMEPAGE READY SOON! The new homepage will be launched in English from September 1st. Korean and Chinese will follow in the months after. Spanish planned for launch in 2001 with German. The new page will have the full dates for the 2001 academic year - April 2001 to March 2002.

Student Visa: The next student visa is for study from April 2001. Application deadline is December 20th. Apply online for your application kit. http://www.yamasa.org/acjs/english/programs/application.html

SHORT-TERM COURSES:

SILAC:
* August 31st program: Finalised.
* September 13th program: Some vacancies (Accommodation: Hotel, Student Village, Villa).

Acceleration E (October 5th): Vacancies, but accommodation limited.
Contact Admissions as soon as possible for information.

AIJP/AJSP: Autumn course starts October 5th - All accommodations have vacancies but book now as we have a lot of people coming. If you want a particular room, then you will need to book early.

Discovery: Bookings for courses I (October 11th) onwards being taken.
