What's new in Okazaki this month? (October November )

November 2000:

November's weather cools off a little more, and the first snow covers the Japan Alps. Okazaki is not so cold, so there is still time to enjoy the kouyou during the first trip to Asuke on November 5th. Culture day (Bunka no hi) on Friday November 3rd is a national holiday, so the school will be closed. Otherwise, take advantage of the long weekend for a trip to Kyoto, Tokyo or wherever you would like to go - all of Japan is easily reachable from Okazaki. Thursday November 23rd (Kinrou kansha no hi - Labour Day) is another national holiday. We also make trips to Hikone, Kyoto and Oku mikawa (see below for details).

November 3 (Fri): Bunka no hi: Culture day. School closed.

November 5 (Sun): Trip to Asuke. A traditional Japanese village, Asuke is the essence of Japan. See traditional handicrafts as they were performed centuries ago, and some of the most beautiful scenery in Central Japan. Reservations: contact Declan Murphy.

Hikone on Lake Biwa
Hikone on Lake Biwa

November 12 (Sun): Trip to Hikone, located in Shiga Prefecture on the northeast shore of Lake Biwa, the largest lake in Japan. First mentioned as a town in literature over 1400 years ago, the castle was built between 1604 and 1622 by Ii Naomasa. Hikone Castle is designated a Japanese National Treasure. On a hilltop surrounded by two moats (originally there were four) and by Genkyu-en, one of the most beautiful gardens in Japan, Hikone Castle overlooks the main road through the historical Omi province to the Imperial Capital, Kyoto. Reservations: contact Declan Murphy.

Ginkakuji Temple in Kyoto

November 19 (Sun): Trip to Kyoto. The Imperial Capital of Japan for over a thousand years, Kyoto needs little introduction. Visit Kouryuuji, Nanzenji, the Path of Philosophy, and Ginkakuji, a temple completely plated in gold leaf. Reservations: contact Declan Murphy.

November 23 (Thu): Kinrou Kansha no hi: Labour Thanksgiving day. School closed.

November 26 (Sun): Trip to Oku Mikawa. See some of the countryside between Okazaki and the Japanese Alps. Reservations: contact Declan Murphy.
