Residence K - Studio Apartments

Light Graphics Version of this section

These 14 studio apartments are about 16-20 minutes walk, (by bicycle only about 6-7 minutes) from the campus. The apartments are usually allocated to students studying at Yamasa long term, or as shared accommodation for couples or young families. They are located in a very quiet residential area.

Location: The apartments are also close to shops (Nafco Shopping center), restaurants, supermarkets and bus-stops. There is a 24-hour convenience store about 3 minutes walk away. Click here for location map (79240 bytes - New window)

Description: There are 3 buildings in total. The apartments are western style with no tatami matting. The floors are of polished wood. The space of each is 25.92 square meters (approximately 280 square feet) with a balcony of 3.24 square meters (approximately 35 square feet). Each has its own bathroom with unit shower/bath. There is a western style toilet. The toilet and the bathroom are separate so its easier to share the apartments.

The apartments have air-conditioning/heating, a large wardrobe, and a kitchen. Yamasa provides a refrigerator, electric hotplate and electric rice cooker. There is no gas cooking. In the main room Yamasa provides a TV, desk, chair, study lamp, bed and bookshelves.

Laundry facilities: Because there is no coin laundry available on-site, and because local coin laundries are considered too expensive, Yamasa has installed a washing machine in every apartment for student use. At this stage we are unable to also provide a dryer, though all of the apartments have a covered balcony at the rear of the apartment. Bicycles are usually parked in front of the apartment entrance or in the courtyard. Both areas are very secure. Free car parking is available.

Telephone and Internet: There is no telephone provided inside the apartment, students will need to obtain a lease or rent a line to get connected - Yamasa will assist you if you need a telephone line installed in your apartment. The nearest public telephone is at the convenience store (3 minutes walk). This telephone is for domestic calls only and doesn't have datajacks. Most students prefer to use the cheaper option of handheld cellular phones (no problem to receive international calls). For internet access, purchasing or renting a PHS card for a wireless connection is usually the cheapest option. For making calls overseas, the Yamasa II building, Yamasa Villa, or internet phones are the best local options.

Futons: Futons are not provided, so for bedding please browse through the futons file.

Advantages reported by students: Close to Nafco Shopping center. Courtyard structure and surrounding residential area is said to lend a "village feel". More independence and privacy. Convenient to have own kitchen and no need to wait. Quiet at night. Good study environment. There is a door between the kitchen and the main room - this makes it easier to keep the main room warn during the winter. Insulation is better than Yamasa Villa. There is a large amount of personal space per student.

Disadvantages reported by students: Lack of telephone inside room is a problem for short term students as renting cellular phones is relatively expensive compared to the telephone access in the student village. No access to internet via Yamasa's LAN. PHS card access is reasonably fast but not as quick as LAN and much more expensive. Plus you need to pay for an account, whereas the LAN access at the student village and on campus is free. No wheelchair access. No microwave oven on site. No Gas cooking.
