SARS Related Admissions Policy

Current Status: Inactive.

Revision of Admissions Policy due to SARS risk:

This policy only affects applicants who are residents of regions listed by the World Health Organisation (WHO) as "areas to which travellers should consider postponing all but essential travel". This is outlined in WHO's SARS Travel Recommendations Summary Table. We are using the WHO table in order to insure transparency and fairness.

Updated: 2003/MAY/19

As of 2003 May 19th, if you live in or have been visiting one of the areas listed by WHO as such, then you will need to:

  • Spend a period of 14 days or more in an area without a WHO travel advisory prior to coming to Yamasa, or
  • Postpone your arrival at Yamasa until the information provided by WHO changes, or
  • Cancel your program.

At the time this update was posted, these 3 options will only affect the enrolment of students from Taiwan, Hong Kong, and certain areas of mainland China. Singaporean and Filipino applicants are not affected by the change.

Please note that if you are a citizen or resident of one of the areas listed, but have not resided in or visited the area during the 2 weeks prior to your arrival, then you will also not be affected by the policy change. Please also note that transits are not a problem provided you do not leave the transit lounges of an airport - ie: transits are OK, but stopovers are not. Your passport stamps will be used as the determining documentation.

Compensation arrangments: Yamasa remains the only APJLE accredited institute in Japan offering full refunds, and we are now going to extend the refunds to cover students unable to study at Yamasa due to our SARS policy, and in some cases airline tickets. There will be significant costs involved for Yamasa, but we are determined to provide fairness as well as maximise the opportunity to study. All student unable to enroll at Yamasa due to our SARS policy will also receive Professional Level password access to the Online Center for Japanese Studies, as well as discounts for future study. Please read the following.

For any student from an area listed by WHO in the SARS Travel Recommendations Summary Table, who as of May 19th has applied for and paid for a Yamasa program, the following compensation policy is now in place.

  • Cancellations - If you need to cancel your program you will receive a full refund of all tuition and accommodation payments made, a coupon entitling you to a 30% discount off tuition and accommodation valid until June 30th 2005.

  • Postponements - If you prefer to postpone your program until the WHO advisory changes, you will also be entitled to a 30% rebate on both tuition and accommodation.

  • Airfares - We realize that the change in policy will affect a number of students from Hong Kong SAR and Taiwan - so in addition to providing the refund/deferral plan, we are also prepared to refund up to the sum of 80000 yen the airfares of those students who have receipts for flights paid for by May 19th, and who provide Yamasa or our offices in Hong Kong or Kaoshiung with documentation indicating that the airline is refusing to refund the cost of their ticket.

    Now for some good news.

The early bird discount has been changed due to some spare capacity due to the SARS policy - studying at Yamasa has never been cheaper. Also, airline ticket prices for the peak summer period are significantly less than at the equivalent travel periods last year. The full refund policy remains in place so if you see a bargain and wish to make a booking, but want to keep your options open have a quick browse/read. Please note however that while Japan is unaffected by SARS, we strongly advise against travelling to Japan via transits through airports in China, Hong Kong and Taiwan or for visiting those countries for visa renewals. Compared to most countries in the world, quarantine and immigration checks at Japanese airports have always been unusually thorough, but if you are flying in from certain Asian airports or on flights originating from Toronto, expect a few more delays and a lot more questions (on health instead of guns/drugs etc) than usual. If you haven't booked your flight yet, a direct flight into Nagoya is probably the best way to arrive. For more information or clarifications, please contact us.
