Visa information for short programs
(Three months duration or less)

If you do not have Japanese citizenship and wish to study at Yamasa for 3 months or less then the visa you require is called a short stay visa. (In Japanese it is called "Tanki-Taizai" - This is the same visa issued to tourists and other short term visitors.) For a short course you do not need a student visa. For this reason, all of Yamasa's SILAC (Short Intensive Language Acquisiton Courses) programs, the Acceleration programs, and the individual quarters of the AIJP (Academic Intensive Japanese Program) are scheduled so that the programs are completed inside 90 days - as this short stay visa cannot be renewed inside Japan beyond the "maximum period of stay".

The first thing to determine is whether
a) you need to apply for the visa before you leave for Japan OR
b) whether it is granted to you on arrival.

This is called "Visa Exemption" and depends entirely on your nationality. Please check the following site from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and see a) if you need to apply and b) how long you can stay. It is important to check how long the visa will permit you to stay in Japan. For example, citizens of Korea do not need to apply for a visa in order to enter Japan - but only for 15 days. For the USA it is 90 days, but for Canada it is 3 months. As each month has a different number of days you will need to check so that you book the right flights at the right time. This information changes constantly, so please check with the MOFA (Ministry of Foreign Affairs) website for information regarding visa exemption and period of stay or contact a Japanese embassy or consulate.

If you need to apply for a short stay visa then you are advised to obtain Yamasa's Letter of Acceptance BEFORE you visit your nearest Japanese Embassy or Consulate. Alternatively your travel agent may be able to assist. The Letter of Acceptance can only be obtained after you complete the enrolment process by completing your application, sending your photographs and paying your tuition fees. The Letter of Acceptance is not issued until the tuition payment is made.

Please remember that as a foreign citizen wishing to study in Japan your visa status is all important. If you have any doubt whatsoever regarding the appropriate visa for you or the application process - please contact Mr. Declan Murphy (Director - International Office) and his staff at Admissions immediately.
