Private/Semi-Private - Fees and Costs

The registration fee has been halved to only 5,000 Yen - and this fee is waived if....

  • you are a Yamasa student OR
  • you have previously studied at Yamasa, OR
  • you have already paid for a standard level OCJS password or higher membership level.

Seasonality: Classes are slightly cheaper to provide in Off-Peak Season. This lower cost structure is also passed on in the form of reduced tuition fees.

  • Off-Peak season is February to May, and September to November.
  • Peak season is June to August, December and January.

Time/Schedule: Classes scheduled in the mornings (AM - at Yamasa defined as 09:00-13:30 inclusive) are slightly more expensive to provide than in the afternoon (PM) schedule, which is 13:40-21:00. A small surcharge of 500 yen per class will apply to classes provided on Sundays or Public Holidays. Please note that if you want to study on Sundays or Public Holidays you need to complete payment at least 56 days in advance - teachers have families and need to know when travel arrangements etc can be made. Some discounts are available, please see below.

    Notes:

  • Eligibility: As the fee structure above does not recover full cost of lesson provision, the fee structure as listed is not available for those with a shugaku student visa, unless you are also participating in group classes. To take private lessons only instead of group classes, a shugaku visa holder needs to first obtain a quotation from Admissions.

  • Cancellation Fees: If you need to cancel a class, then you need to contact Yamasa's Student Services office (0564-55-8111) during business hours (9am-5pm) no later than 24 hours prior to the class time to avoid a cancellation fee. If you can cancel less than 24 hours before the lesson then the cancellation fee is equal to the lesson fee.

In the case of two people taking semi-private lessons where only one person cancels, the remaining person who is taking the class would have to pay the private lesson rate. For example, if the AM off-peak 15-84 lesson semi-private rate of 2,200 Yen per person was paid and one person cancelled, then the rate for the lesson would become 3,300 Yen (AM off-peak 15-84 lessons).

Fees are denominated in Japanese Yen.

As you can see from the table above, it is considerably cheaper (especially for longer term stays) if you pay all tuition in advance. This is because the administrative costs are lower, and these cost savings are passed onto you. If you pay for 6 weeks or more in advance and then need to shorten your stay, there is a full refund subject to the policies outlined in the "Refunds" file.
