Japan Discovery - Outline

The Discovery programs consist of 2 stages:

  • Intensive language acquisition, and
  • Travel component in a small sized group tour.

    a) Intensive Language Acquisition: Participants can study Japanese for 2, 4, 6, 8 or 10 weeks. You can choose what and how you wish to learn. In the group class formats, there are a minimum of 6 levels - double what is usually available at other schools, and up to 12 levels in summer, with better student/faculty ratio than any other accredited school in Japan. All class sizes are small and the facilities provided in Aoi Hall are excellent. Computer labs, the recreational facilities and your teacher's offices are on the same floor for easy access. The class formats include...

    • SILAC format: 23 conversation based classes per week using the SILAC curriculum
    • Acceleration format: 28 conversation based classes per week using any one of the three Acceleration Format 2 options.
    • Private format A:12 private classes per week with individualized curriculum.
    • Private format B:18 private classes per week with individualized curriculum.

    b) Travel component: Each tour is in relatively small groups, even in the peak summer season the average size is still only 7. With Option A you can select 3, 5, 8, 10 or 12 day tours to complete after your course of studies. Option B allows you to take a break from your studies and do the tour for either 10 or 12 days before resuming studies - a flexible program that allows you to see festivals such as the fantastic Gion festival in Kyoto, and the Nachi Fire Festival during the summer, or the Sapporo Snow Festival & skiing/snowboarding opportunities in Hokkaido during the winter. Option C is completely flexible. It is also possible to do the tour only.

Weekend & extra-curricular activities: At Yamasa there are also a wide range of weekend tours and activities - Discovery program students receive priority placement for all of these activities and also for some events will receive additional discounts.
