2012 Summer Business Japanese Internship

Outline: This 6 week long short summer option combines 4 weeks of intensive classes followed by an internship in a Japanese speaking workplace. The classes are those provided by Format 1 of the Japanese for Business and Professional Purposes program. The internship is with a Japanese company or organization in Okazaki, or a nearby city such as Toyota or Nagoya. In addition to the workplace experience, for 2 days of the internship, you have the opportunity to shadow a CEO. On one day the CEO is Japanese, on the other day with a Japanese-speaking foreigner managing a business in Japan.

Program Dates: July 3rd - August 21st 2012. Participants need to arrive no later than Monday July 2nd if accommodation is required. Those crossing 6 time zones or more are advised to arrive on Saturday June 30th, or Sunday July 1st. Accommodation is guaranteed to all successful applicants if student housing is requested. Classes are held from 9am to 2:30pm, Monday to Friday. During the study component, public holidays are ignored, and classes are scheduled as usual. During the work placement component, it is possible, depending on the industry, that the company or organization may have holidays related to the Obon Festival. Alternative activities will be arranged if required.

Fees & Costs: The program fee is 296,500 yen. The program fee includes all tuition, textbooks & learning materials. The program fee does not include: apartment or accommodation fees, transport from Nagoya airport to Yamasa (unless you use the airport limousine bus, in which case Yamasa will reimburse you for the 1700 yen fare in full), transport between accommodation and Yamasa, travel insurance, air fares to/from Japan etc. An itemized invoice and receipt is issued to all applicants who complete the application form and then successfully pass the online testing process. Completion of fee payment is due no later than 35 days prior to commencement. There is a late fee of 10500 yen for payments made less than 35 days prior to commencement.

A 10% discount on the program fee is available if payment is completed by the close of business on March 13th, 2012.

Entry Requirements: The Business Summer Internship specializes in the language used in Japanese business and professional environments, and participants will need to have a high level of motivation. The program is aimed at learners who are interested in working in Japanese companies or organizations, or in working in environments with Japanese-speaking people.

As an absolute minimum:

  1) All participants should be aged 20 years or over at time of commencement. Applicants under the age of 20 will not be accepted. Priority will be given to applicants with a degree and/or those with some business experience or background.
  2) This course is specifically designed for learners who are at intermediate level and above.
  a) All participants should have finished learning the equivalent of the Minna no Nihongo 1 & 2 series texts. This means the participants should have already learned keigo (Honorific language), and have passed or be at a proficiency level equivalent to Japanese Language Proficiency Test N3 (or the old Level 3) or higher.
  b) It is necessary to pass Yamasa's online test and online listening test for the JBPP.

After you complete your application form, you will need to complete the following:

  Online Test

  Online Listening Test
  http://db.yamasa.ws/JBPPonlineListeningTest/loginpage.aspx (opens new window)

As a minimum, you need a score of 75% correct or higher for JBPP entry. After taking the online tests, you will be emailed advice from the JBPP instructors.
  3) Level check test is conducted the day before the commencement of class. Applicants who are unable to make the grade would be able to transfer into alternative programs.
  4) It is not a pre-requisite but it is helpful if you have some experience of using computers and the internet. You do not need to bring a computer with you, but may find it useful to do so.
  5) Citizens of certain countries will need to find guarantors. Please check the Visa Requirements section to see if this applies to you.

Location: The study component takes place in Okazaki. The work placement will be in Aichi Prefecture, but not necessarily in Okazaki. There is a possibility that your placement will be in Toyota City, Anjo City, Nagoya City or other nearby locations.

Facilities: The facilities in use are the same as for the JBPP.

Accommodation: The accommodation options are the same as for the JBPP.

Visas: The visa requirements are the same as for the JBPP.

Applications: Please click here to apply.

Deadlines: Applications and Online Tests need to be completed before May 22nd. Unsuccessful applicants will be notified immediately. Space in the program is limited, so early application is advised.

Payments: Payment of program fees is usually done by Bank Transfer. If your application is approved, Yamasa's Admissions Office will forward an invoice to you by email in the form of a PDF document. Yamasa will confirm all remittances via email.
