Introduction: One of the fastest ways to increase your Japanese level.
Considerable preparation is required and with the small class sizes there is maximum interaction between students and faculty.
The Acceleration Program
is an ultra-intensive program for students who want rapid language acquisition.
Using small classes (maximum class size of group classes is 8, average is less), mixed with customised instruction, the
curriculum moves about 50% faster than the AIJP.
The program is open to students from beginner to upper intermediate levels, and covers all skills - reading,
writing, listening and speaking with an emphasis on grammar, correct use and pronunication. Kanji learning is also a key focus.
The program is delivered in a series of levels so that composite classes are unnecessary.

Outline: The program features 30 classes per week. In the early stages of each
module you will usually find yourself reviewing past knowledge, brushing up on forgotten grammar, and having mistakes
and bad habits/pronunication corrected.
To give you an idea of the intensity of the program schedule, please note that the APJLE regulations require a minimum of 800 classes/year - and most institutes
deliver 810-820 program hours a year with the permitted 20 students per class format in use. By comparison the Acceleration program covers more than 348 classes in
12 weeks, in very small class sizes.
Methodology: The Acceleration Program is a full immersion course, with all classes conducted in the target language.
There are supporting translation and explanatory notes to help you prepare and review your lessons.
Please note that Romaji - the Roman alphabet - is not used in instruction.
Yamasa's teaching teams use an interactive style - rote learning has no place in the curriculum.
During language classroom instruction, the maximum number of students per class is 8 students,
and the teaching team is usually 4 instructors.
The schedule below does not include preparation time. You will need to prepare for classes
and submit homework tasks.

Levels: All students entering the programs are graded via a placement test and placement interview after arrival.
The placement test consists of 3 stages, a written test, a listening comprehension test and a one-on-one interview. This ensures that faculty can place you in a class with students who have attained a similar score in the placement test and are of similar ability. Depending on the number of students in the class above or below your initial placement and the difference in the proficiency level, it may be possible to change classes after consultation and re-assessment with your academic advisor.
At Yamasa Elementary covers curriculum to Level N4 of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test. This requires the ability to read/write at least 300 joyo Kanji, and have a vocabulary knowledge of about 1500 words. Usually reaching Level N4 requires approximately 300 classes if beginning from Foundation.
At Yamasa Intermediate covers curriculum from Level N4 to N2 of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test. This requires the ability to read/write at least 1000 joyo Kanji, and have a vocabulary knowledge of about 6000 words. Usually reaching this level requires approximately 600-700 classes if beginning from Foundation.
From Foundation to Beginner level, the main texts being used are the Minna no Nihongo series. The main texts used in the pre-intermediate levels and above are not decided upon until after the faculty have completed proficiency testing at the start of each course. This is so that they can select texts that can match the strengths and weaknesses of the students, so it will depend very much upon the level and Kanji background of the students who apply. The intermediate texts generally require you to be able to read at least 300-350 Kanji.
