What is a Futon?

Sleeping on a futon.

A futon is Japanese bedding. Although beds are becoming more common, traditional Japanese houses are usually small, and so to make better use of space Japanese people slept on their tatami mat floors with their futons. In the morning these could be packed away to maximize the amount of living space available.

In the picture above you can see a student sleeping on the tatami mats in the Rec World Hotel apartments. Traditionally almost all rooms had tatami mats. If you stay in a homestay or at the hotel then you will probably be sleeping on the tatami mat floors as above. All Yamasa owned accommodation though has western style floors (usually polished wood) and bed frames are provided. You then just place the futon on the bed frame.

A futon set at Yamasa consists of the (a) "shikibuton" - the soft base that is like a mattress, (b) "kakebuton" - the quilt/doona like cover (c) a pillow (d) sheets and pillow cover (machine washable). Each set is clean and comes directly from the futon store. If you rent or purchase futons via Yamasa we will place them on the bed in your room for your arrival.

Futon Prices:

Purchase price is JPY25,900

Lease price is JPY1,500 per week with a JPY2,000 handling charge. If you are staying less than a full additional week at the end of your course, it is possible to extend the lease by JPY300 per day.

If you have friends in Japan able to lend you futons - ask them to send the futons to Yamasa about 1 week before you arrive and we will store them until your reserved room is vacant and cleaned, and then place them on the bed for you. There is no charge for our handling service.
