University Japanese Program - Minimum Entry Requirements

This is an academic course, and participants will need to have a high level of motivation. Most students at Yamasa are graduates, however this program is aimed at university/college students. It is not a pre-requisite that you currently be enrolled in a university level program, however if you are not currently enrolled then it is essential that you have studied Japanese in an academic environment.

As an absolute minimum:

1) You need to be a either a college student or graduate. If you are not currently enrolled in a college, you need to have completed a minimum of 1 year or equivalent of college level Japanese.

2) All participants should be aged 18 years and over at time of commencement. Applicants under the age of 18 will not be accepted. There is no upper age limit.

3) As a general rule, you need to have completed at least 1 year of college level Japanese or its equivalent.
For example to qualify for the second lowest level class in the program: You need to be able to read and hand write all hiragana and katakana, know the vocabulary on the pre-requisite list, and be able to recognize and be able to read (but not necessarily be able to hand write) the kanji characters on the pre-requisite lists below.

  • Kanji Pre-requisite list (pdf)
  • Vocabulary Pre-requisite list (pdf)

Placement testing is completed on the day of commencement from 9am. Applicants who are unable to make the lowest level of the program are able to transfer into alternative programs such as SILAC Plus, with the difference in tuition refunded in full.

    4) It is not a pre-requisite but it is helpful if you have some experience of using computers and the internet. You do not need to bring a computer with you, but may find it useful to do so.

    5) Citizens of certain countries will need to find guarantors. Please check the Visa Requirements section to see if this applies to you.
