  • The University Japanese Program is a very intensive summer program available for 7 or 9 weeks duration. In 2011, a new option has been provided for the summer hemisphere summer. The multi-level program is designed to enable students to be able to invest in a high quality program designed to help you "skip" a year of college Japanese classes. For instance someone who has completed their first year of Japanese, would have the proficiency required of a third year student by the end of the course.

Unlike the SILAC and SILAC Plus options which concentrate more on conversation skills, the curriculum of the University Japanese Program is designed to rapidly improve your listening comprehension, speaking skills, accent reduction, reading comprehension, and ability to compose written work (online and/or by handwriting). It is also a much more intensive program than any of the other courses on offer during the summer by Yamasa, or by other summer programs offered in Japan by universities or foundations.

The 30 class per week program includes:

  • Intensive language learning in small groups (maximum class size is 8) with highly qualified and experienced faculty recruited from university Japanese departments around the world and coordinated by Yamasa's OCJS faculty. All class coordinators have masters degrees. Each class is taught by a team using the direct method. The small size of the class ensures individual attention despite summer being the peak season, and plenty of opportunities to practise speaking and communication skills.

  • Private Tutorials each and every week. The opportunity to invest in language skills through a intensive immersion course is a rare one, and our one-to-one tutorials are designed to help you achieve the maximum possible progress. Each tutorial is taught by the same instructor, often by your team leader, who will be your academic advisor for the duration of the program. The designated teacher will know your strengths and weaknesses, help you manage your study plan, and be able to draw upon their extensive experience.

  • Semi-private classes each and every week. Each Friday afternoon you will have 2 semi-private classes (maximum of 4 students per class, with 1 instructor and 1 TA) to enhance your speaking and listening skills. These are structured conversational classes reinforcing the grammar and vocabulary learned each week.

  • Computer Aided Language Learning Laboratory classes each and every week. Depending on your level, there will be a minimum of 2 CALL classes each week. This enables you to concentrate on learning at your own pace, interacting alternately between the software and one-to-one sessions with the teachers. Most students use the CALL classes to improve kanji or listening skills, but you can choose to concentrate on any component, and this is one of the advantages of having an individual academic advisor to assist you with study planning.

  • Field Trips enable you to learn in context. There are 3 field trips scheduled for the summer, and 2 for the winter module. Each has a different theme and destination. The first usually is focused on the art of "monozukuri" and includes visits to modern manufacturing plants (Toyota Motor) and traditional craft makers. The "sekaiisan" theme usually involves a visit to Kyoto and other historic sites of Japan, usually for festivals. Othe field trips include visits to mega-cities such as Tokyo and Osaka (urbanization - "toshika"), or explore the historic sites and rural beauty of Nagano.

Yamasa has a wide range of accommodation options including homestays, studio apartments or the Student Village.
