Language & Culture Program - Outline

Methodology:

The program combines the following components: Language learning classes, lunch with teachers, culture seminars, day field trips and some overnight tours. The lunches with teaching staff are part of the program, providing extra opportunities to practise. All language learning classes are communication skills based. Please note that Romaji - the Roman alphabet - is not used in instruction. From the initial lessons, you will be reading and writing exclusively in Japanese. Complete beginners will be able to learn from scratch.

The classes are taught in Japanese using the direct method, but have supporting translation and explanations, as do the culture seminars. To understand the study notes applicants for the program need to be able to either have a Japanese level above JLPT3, or be able to converse in at least one of the following languages: Chinese, English, German, Korean or Spanish.

The schedule below does not include preparation time. You will need to prepare for classes and submit homework tasks. All students will also have access to the interactive learning resources produced for Yamasa's OCJS. Regardless of whether you study for 2 weeks or 12, you will continue to have access to the OCJS for a full year, helping you retain and expand on your knowledge of Japanese.

All language classes are 50 minutes in duration, with 10 minute breaks between classes. All culture classes are 90 minutes in duration, with a 10 minute interval between classes.
