Shinkansen ("Bullet train") route.

Arrivals:

Shinkansen routeIf you are arriving by the Shinkansen, it is usually quicker to change from the Shinkansen to the Tokaido line at either Nagoya or Toyohashi rather than at Mikawa-Anjo - even though Mikawa-Anjo is closer. The reason for this is that Mikawa-Anjo only the Kodama (shinkansen trains that stop at all stations) stops at Mikawa-Anjo. If you take the Hikari or Nozomi (expresses) it is best to change at Nagoya. You should really only use Toyohashi is you are arriving from the east by Kodama. Some of the Hikari trains do stop at Toyohashi, so it is worth checking if you have sufficient time.

Travel:

For travel to the west (Gifu, Hikone, Kyoto etc), a Kodama train from Mikawa-Anjo is often the fastest route. For travel to Osaka and beyond ( Hiroshima etc), its better to head to Nagoya and board a Hikari or Nozomi. For travel to the east, the Kodama and some of the Hikari trains stop at Toyohashi. For travel to Yokohama or Tokyo it is often quicker to take a Limited Express to Toyohashi, and board a Hikari from there to Shinagawa or Tokyo, or if you are in a hurry (and have the budget), take a Limited Express to Nagoya and board a "Nozomi".
