Social Tennis Club

Minami Koen tennis courts Since May 2001 we started a social tennis club. The club is open to anyone and we play every Friday (3pm-5pm) and also on Saturdays (11am-1pm). We usually play on the courts located in Minami Koen (South Park).

Yamasa will provide transport from the Institute or JR station if requested, though most people make their own way to the courts which are within walking distance (5-8 minutes by bicycle) of the student accommodation. Free parking is available if you prefer to drive.

Absolutely anyone can join in - students, teachers, and anybody else who would like to play - it doesn't matter what age, nationality or how fit you are, nor does it matter if you have never played tennis before. Its just for fun. You don't have to be Martina Hingis or Pete Sampras to join in - everybody is welcome whatever your ability. The main purpose is to relax, make friends, and also to speak Japanese out of the classroom.

Tennis In addition to students and teachers, we also invite local residents and friends to participate. This is done via the Japanese version of the ACJS newsletter and through the printed newsletter "Yamasa Tsuushin".

Minami Koen also has gardens, a public swimming pool (open only in summer from 9 to 5 but very cheap - more details here), gardens and lawns. Its a good place for a picnic brunch/lunch in the surroundings. There are some shady trees adjoining the courts so you can either eat during breaks or have a picnic afterwards.

COSTS: If you have your own racquet its only 300 yen. If you don't want to bring a racquet to Japan or don't want to buy one, then you can rent one from the International Office for 200 yen. If you need a racquet please let us know at least when you book.

BOOKINGS: Please book so that we know how many courts are needed. For bookings contact tennis@yamasa.org - at least 3 days in advance.

Digital Photography

Since August 2001 there is a digital photography circle meeting once a month in Aoi Hall. The circle is basically a club comprised of local residents, students and Frontia staff with an interest in digital photography and video.

The group usually meets on the second Thursday of each month from 7pm in Aoi Hall.

COSTS: Nothing, but bring along some food or drink to share. You also need to bring your own camera, equipment etc.

The meeting is occasionally cancelled so its best to confirm in advance. Please contact photoclub@yamasa.org
